Twelve years ago citizens in our area lined up to donate blood on September 11th, 2001. Thousands of donors flocked to NYBC blood drives in an outpouring of support. Local citizens, mayoral candidates, celebrities, newscasters all lined up to donate. The support went beyond New York, where waits of 2 hours were reported in Madison, Wisconsin and Yasser Arafat was photographed giving blood in Gaza that was intended to go to victims of September 11th.
Since the attacks, NYBC has always seen an increase in people wanting to give blood on that day. A recent article in USA Today looks at the ways that people commemorate this important day, including donating blood.
