For 30+ years the New York Police Department (NYPD) has supported New York Blood Center’s mission by hosting blood drives throughout the five boroughs, but on Friday, August 23, 2013 NYPD achieved a new record with a staggering 1056 total donations on their one-day blood drive, beating the previous record of 903 donation. Donations were made by recruits, instructors and personnel at the New York Police Department Academy. 402 of the donations were made by 201 recruits donating on Alyx (automated red cell) procedure. NYPD also holds the record for most automated red cell donations at a single blood drive with NYBC. The NYPD is the largest single organization to host blood drives, with 12,171 donations in 2012, and the NYPD Academy holds two drives per class. As we head into the Labor Day holiday, We at NYBC and the patients who benefit from these lifesaving gifts offer our thanks to New York’s Finest for their long standing support.
