BLOOD EMERGENCY:ALL BLOOD TYPES ARE NEEDEDGIVE TODAY

Miss New York 2021

Sydney Saves Lives for NYBC

Sydney Wallace Park, crowned Miss New York in March of 2021, attempted to donate blood in early July and found that her blood hemoglobin did not meet the minimum levels set by FDA to protect her donor safety. This is often related to the amount of iron in your diet and is a common challenge for many when trying to donate blood. After learning more about New York Blood Center and the chronic gap in blood donations during the pandemic, she saw incredible value in using her platform to spread awareness about the critical need for blood donations. "Giving blood is the single greatest gift we can give"- says Sydney Park. As the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy approaches, this is a critical time to spread awareness to youth and millennial-aged blood donors and NYC's diverse communities that their blood donations are vital in saving lives for the community. Did you know 20% of the U.S.'s overall donor base was made up of 16-18-year-olds prior to the pandemic, but that number has dropped by 46.5%?!

Sydney actively supports Childhood Cancer Foundation Candlelighters NYC, an organization in Manhattan where children from all over the world go to receive the best pediatric cancer treatment available. Blood donations help meet the daily transfusion needs of these cancer and surgery patients, and this need has motivated Sydney to donate blood and inspire others to do.  See Sydney Park's biography here

Donate Blood

Not able to donate but still want to support patients in need?

Like Sydney, many individuals are deferred or cannot make it into our centers for various reasons.  In lieu of blood donations, Sydney strives to raise $5,000 for NYBC to continue improving and expanding blood donor recruitment efforts to collect critical units of blood needed, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the cancellation of high school, college, and other lifesaving blood drive events. In honor of Sydney's unwavering community service work within the state of New York, you can give a financial gift or make a pledge to give in her honor below.
